Sahara von Hattenberger

“With 1Q84, we discover a solo artist (von Hattenberger) who navigates contrasts of genre and style with ease, gifted with beautiful musicality, sound and an airy, lithe, highly precise technique..”

About

Sahara is a member of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, and is the co-founder of Duo Étrange (Cello+Soprano). The latter has their debut album slotted for next year through ATMA Classique, Canada’s most prestigious classical label, with 5 new commissions on the horizon for a debut at Montréal’s famous Salle Bourgie series.

Sahara has been the recipient of many sizeable grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, allowing her to commission dozens of Canadian and American composers. She has been a resident artist at BangOnACan, Yellow Barn, and Pôle Relève through Le Vivier.

As a graduate of the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, (B.A. 2016 / M.M. 2018), she completed her primary studies with Matt Haimovitz, Brian Manker, Ariel Barnes, and Elizabeth Dolin with additional tutelage from Colin Carr, Johannes Moser, Philipe Muller, and Truls Mork

Sahara’s music has been featured on CBC Radio Canada, Jazziz, V13, AllAboutJazz, whole note magazine, and more.

In 2024 she released her first solo album through the label Odd Sounds with collaborative pianist Joanne Kang (from Carnegie Hall’s: “ensemble connect”) as well as acclaimed jazz performers Jim Doxas (drums) and Adrian Vedady (bass), which featured repertoire by Claude Bolling alongside three new commissions by Grammy-winning composer Remy Le Boeuf, Malcolm Sailor, and Jeffrey Fong. Her mission as a chamber musician is to bring engaging contemporary music to the forefront.

QUOTES AND REVIEWS ON 1Q84:

“1Q84 is a grand statement by the cellist that impresses for its inspired concept but also the high level of musicianship. Sahara is a cellist of exceptional skill, versatility, and, as the Bolling performance demonstrates, stamina; the cadenzas that intermittently appear make that even more clear than does her playing as a quartet member. Kang is terrific throughout, and Vedady and Doxas are superb too. The leader is fortunate indeed to have been joined by musicians who were clearly sympathetic to her vision for the project and willing to give themselves fully to its realization. It takes a special cellist to operate as comfortably within a jazz context as a classical one; von Hattenberger impresses as a perfect example of one capable of doing so.” (#24: Textura’s Top 30 Jazz Records of 2024.)

Ron Schepper – Textura

“1Q84 is an auspicious start to von Hattenberger’s career and, hopefully, one that will set the tone for more brilliance to come.”

Hrayr Attarian – All About Jazz

“With 1Q84, we discover a solo artist (von Hattenberger) who navigates contrasts of genre and style with ease, gifted with beautiful musicality, sound and an airy, lithe, highly precise technique…A very nice album.”

Frédéric Cardin – Pan M 360

“Whereas in the original recording the rhythm section was confined to pretty much just that, in this new rendition the piano, bass and drums are given improvisatory sections in each of the six movements. While we expect it from jazz journeymen Vedady and Doxas, classical pianist Kang also shows herself right at home in “uncharted” waters and the end result is exhilarating.”

David Olds – The WholeNote

“Von Hattenberger’s quartet ensemble isn’t content with reverential replication, grafting fresh improvisations onto Bolling’s original work highlighted by pianist Joanne Kang’s energetic, melodic soloing. Percussionist Jim Doxas’s drumming gives disc two’s “Air Chrysalis” a rock feel, and Von Hattenberger looks at a different type of ‘80s composition with a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” Witty, uplifting and original, 1Q84 is a pleasant autumn surprise that holds up to repeated listening.”

Michael Larson – Shepherd Express

“…gorgeous and fluid…”

Women in Jazz Media

“This is chamber music at its best. It’s an astounding album… Sahara von Hattenberger is stellar on cello and her carefully picked musicians bring their own brilliance and sparkle to this incredible project.”

Dee Dee McNeil – Making a Scene

“This new interpretation… is a stunning hour-long work in six movements, and will inspire repeated listening by all who have the privilege of hearing it. Disc two features four tracks, most notably a performance of the Kate Bush masterpiece, Running Up That Hill (original release in 1984). Von Hattenberger’s interpretation of the song is poignant and reflective, with a slow lyrical introduction and a percolating second half.”

David Reed – Belleville Intelligencer

“Haunting, resonant, and darkly inspirational, 1Q84 is a treasure for both literary and music connoisseurs, highly recommended”
